Bad Feeling at Work

Monothematic Publication

This project centred on designing a publication with a monothematic theme based on a supplied psychological essay. “Bad Feeling at Work” explored how people often dislike their jobs but work in roles that require them to "smile like they mean it," highlighting the concept of emotional labour. This theme was visually expressed through imagery of clowns, figures who both literally and figuratively paint on smiles for work, serving as a powerful metaphor for the essay’s message. The colour palette featured primary colours in muted, darkened tones to reflect the weight of the topic. Additionally, the publication’s cover jacket displays a close-up photograph of a smiling clown, which, when removed, reveals the same clown frowning underneath, further emphasising the idea of concealed emotions.

Seven Column Grid

After analysing the existing report contents, the theme This project was to create a publication design for the State Library’s Annual Report of 2024. Analysing the existing report contents, the theme “Strength in Numbers” was devised to reflect the underlying concept of connection, both between people and through the library’s technological advancements (think binary coding). Various Roman numeral motifs were utilised to reinforce the idea of merging historical elements with modernism.

Publication Design

After multiple site visits, horse imagery was repeatedly evident, appearing in murals, statues, and chess pieces. These visuals were gradient-mapped in Photoshop to create single-toned images and were incorporated throughout the publication design. Additionally, the horse symbolises strength, tying back to the overarching theme.
